Wife, mom, actress, singer, today’s “Awesome Facebook Friend Of The Day” is Melissa Cartwright. I first met Melissa when she started as an intern in the promotions department at WVFJ, Atlanta. From intern she moved to part-time and then full-time, handling promotions and some on-air shifts.
While I was at Gospel Music Channel (now UP TV) I hired Melissa to work in the programming department. It wasn’t long before she found her way to doing some on-camera work as well.
While working at the radio station Melissa married Shawn, who had proposed to her on stage between acts at one of the station’s concerts. She became a mom (for the first time) during her time at Gospel Music Channel. Somehow, with all of that going on Melissa also managed to maintain a pretty active career on the stage, starring in dramas, comedies and musicals.
Melissa came back to work after maternity leave, but eventually, after a lot of prayer, decided she needed to be at home as a full-time mom. She left the network in January 2010. I left not long after and returned to WVFJ, which had moved its studios next door to the Legacy Theater. One evening as I was leaving work Melissa was pulling into the parking lot, she was appearing in a show at the theater and was on her way to rehearsal. I got a big hug and we had a minute to chat. Melissa told me that Shawn had accepted a position in Virginia and that they were almost ready to move. That was the last time I saw her.
I do hear from her from time to time via Facebook. She’s had another baby and seems to be doing very well. I wouldn’t have expected any less. Melissa was always a sweet, gentle person. But she was never a push-over. She holds her convictions deeply, and they are always based on her abiding faith. It was a pleasure to get to work with her at two places, I just wish those days hadn’t gone by so quickly.
